My first time in Europe, and the first big 'trip' I was taking on my own, I chose a small apartment in one of the outer arrondissements of Paris. Thinking back, I must have walked a year's worth of steps in that week - it was about a 30min walk just to get the Siene, and then I would expand out from there, sometimes walking from 10am to 9pm without stopping for lunch or dinner. I was just getting my feet under me in shooting film - I was still too precious with every frame, second guessing myself out of multiple opportunities. But I remember always the small memories I made alone in such a big city; falling off a rock in front of two aghast french grandmothers, the cashier letting me take a bottle of wine and some cheese despite being 3 euro short, watching a rainstorm roll in over the rooftops while listening to the moodiest jazz albums I could find.
